Supreme Court to Review Election Law Amendments

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has announced its decision to review the recent amendments to the country’s election laws.

These changes, passed by Parliament last month, have sparked controversy among opposition parties and civil society groups, who argue that they could undermine the independence of the Election Commission and compromise the fairness of upcoming elections.

A three-member bench, led by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed, has issued notices to the Attorney General and the Election Commission, demanding detailed justifications for the amendments.

During today’s hearing, senior lawyer Makhdoom Ali Khan, representing the opposition, highlighted provisions that allegedly grant excessive powers to the executive branch.

He argued that these changes could enable undue influence over election officials and manipulate electoral boundaries. The Attorney General, however, defended the amendments as necessary for streamlining the electoral process and ensuring administrative efficiency.

Civil society organizations and legal experts have also expressed concerns about the potential for abuse of power and the erosion of electoral independence.

The Supreme Court’s review is expected to play a crucial role in determining the legal and constitutional validity of these amendments, with significant implications for the upcoming general elections.
